Bahama Vacations - Lovely Ladies of Miss Universe

What could be better than to plan your next Bahamas Vacation and see the lovely ladies of the Miss Universe pageant? Here they are in Bimini Bahamas ...

Bahama Vacations really do have it all!

Bahama Vacations- Miss Universe Contestants Visit

Will you be enjoying your Bahama Vacations at the Bimini Sands Marina and Resort when some of the contestants from the 2009 Miss Universe Pageant stop by Bimini?

I know that most avid fishermen of the Bahamas would like to get a chance to meet ... or at least see ... these lovely ladies in person. Right now they are scheduled to visit the shark lab and the fountain of youth on South Bimini, Saturday August 8th ... will you be there? I don't think that any of the sweet young things will be needing the refreshing waters of the fountain, do you?

They will end their Bimini Bahamas tour at Mackey's Sand Bar at the Beach Club ... this place is terrific and I have been known to tip a few cool beverages there, also ... I wonder if they will end up dancing on the bar like these "happy" folks!

The actual pageant will be held in Nassau on the 23rd ... stop by the Beach Club ...  it will be a great place to watch the festivities!

Bahama Vacations in the Exuma Bahamas

With over 700 Islands of the Bahamas .. you won't run out of choices for a very long time! When you want a little adventure in your travel, consider cruising in your own boat to the Exumas

The water is drop dead beautiful ... actually it is even better in person! We came over in our 430 sportfish, the Funlovers and spent a couple of weeks in Bimini, Bahamas then traveled to Chub Key and on to Nassau. We fueled and stocked up on food and liquor in Nassau because we just weren't sure what we would find in the Exumas ... we went late in the Hurricane season and many things had closed down already.

From Nassau, our firststop was throwing out the hook at Allens Cay ... a terrific protected bay and spent the night. early the next morning we dingied over to land to check out all the Iguana's. They are protected by the Bahamian government and quite a sight to see. The beach was pristine and there were no footprints in the sand ... what can I say ... it was enchanting!

We dingied back to the boat and were making ready to leave when we heard the throb of engines ... lot's of them ... I poked my head out and you won't believe what I saw ... 3, 35 foot raceboats with 4 engines apiece on them! There must have been at least 50 people "tourists" on the boats ... they beached on the shore and everyone spilled out to look at the Iguana's ... :-)

It was like Disney world in the Bahamas! OH MY!

We pulled up anchor and left for Compass Cay ... truly a gift from heaven. This slice of the Bahamas has been tended to with a great deal of care by Tucker Rolle. There are strict rules about where the trash goes and where the food leftovers go ... and the food goes to the trained nurse sharks in the bay. Knock on the wooden platform and they come right up to you and if it is high tide, they will even hop up on the low dock for you to pet them ... no kidding!

We spent a week there and then traveled down as far as Staniel Cay before a hurricane started brewing and we hightailed up to the Abacos ... but that is another story, for another day ...

Bahama Vacations – Bimini Ring Game Frenzy!

One of the many things to do while on your Bahamas vacation is to learn and perfect the Bimini Ring Game. This crazy game is addictive and just gets better and better as the evening progresses. Could it possibly be the beer that is consumed along with the playing … lol! Shagger, leaner, creeper and boomering are all special “cool” terms associated with this game.

History tells us that this Pub game was originally called Ringing the Bull …. It involved swinging a bull's nose-ring, which was attached to a string, in an arc so as to hook it onto a bull's horn or hook attached to the wall. It had stay on the horn or hook in order to count as a successful throw. This game can be traced back to the late 12th and early 13th centuries in Jolly Olde England where Robin Hood and his band Merry Men were busy robbing the rich and giving to the poor!

It seems almost natural that pirates, like Blackbeard and his gang would bring this fun game over to the Caribbean Islands on their plundering journeys in the 1700’s and from here it has spread worldwide. Bimini Ring Game tournaments are held worldwide with bar’s and backyards all over the globe sporting this famous hook and ring game!

We even brought the first Bimini Ring Game to the tiny Island of Guanaja in Honduras and had our friend Brewski Bob instruct all the locals in proper technique! We feel instrumental in the growth of this “sport”.

Our condo on South Bimini in the Bahamas offers our variation of the Bimini Ring Game so you can polish up your skills for the watering holes of Bimini!

Here you can see BigAl in a friendly game of ring toss with one of the locals …

Bahama Vacations - Kalik and Conch Ceviche!

Enjoy great food while on your Bahamas vacation. It is always terrific when you can use fresh food from the area. Well, fresh conch is as close as the nearest dock where locals come in to sell their catch .... they will even clean it for you and for just a couple of dollars you can whip up a gourmet treat!

Conch ceviche is easy to prepare and there are several variations .... I like mine with a "medium" heat to it, but some make it so hot that your eyebrows sweat ... lol!

To begin, get out your chopping board and chef knife. Chop the cleaned conch into small pieces and then dice red onion, celery, red, green and yellow peppers. Add fresh squeezed orange and lime juice, then S & P to taste. Break out the Louisiana Crystal hot sauce and experiment. Remember, you can always add more, but you can't take it away! When a light perspiration begins to form on your brow and you have a "glow" on, it is just right ... put it in the refrigerator for just a bit to "cook".

Now we come to a critical decision ... what do we drink with this spicy treat? Everyone knows that beer complements spicy food—the fizz, the slight "hoppy" bitterness, the chill—all counter the effect of heat. Sounds like a brilliant idea to me. Kalik Gold for everyone!

It pays to treat yourself well on your Bahama vacations. These will be memories that you keep forever!

Bahama Vacations – How to Travel with Pets

When you begin to look at Bahama vacations you will probably have many questions. For me, one of my very first, was, can I bring my dog with me … after all, he goes everywhere with us. Our four legged babies need a vacation also, as long as you prepare in advance for it … and the Bahamas makes it easy!
Our Maltese, Houdini, travels with us every time we go and is well known on South Bimini … whether we arrive by plane or boat he is always welcome ….

Bimini Sands is a pet friendly environment and our condo that we rent out welcomes your well behaved "furry" family members.

First off, you must clear customs. You must have a permit for entry and you can download it here … start early because the Bahamian government moves on, well, Bahamas time mon … lol!

There is a lot for you and your pet to do once you are officially on vacation … perhaps a tour of the island ….
Get a hug from your favorite bartender at Mackey's Sand Bar!

Of course, a cool beverage is always nice …
Or just relaxing on a lounger …

And there is always reeling in the big ones!

Traveling in the Bahamas with your pet is great fun for everyone. So when you begin to plan your Bahamas vacation … don’t forget your four legged family members!

Bahama Vacations – Don’t Forget to Pack the Wasabi!

Fish Bimini? You will find some of the fishing in the world located right in the Bahamas. If you want your Bahamas vacation to include catching some world class tuna you don’t have to go any further than the Bimini’s. Ernest Hemingway fished these waters and made big game fishing a glamorous sporting activity in this area that still brings in fisherman from all over the world.
Bimini Bahamas, less than 50 miles off the Florida coast, is just a hop, skip and a jump in your fishing boat and with just a bit of local knowledge and skill, you too can be bringing home the big ones for dinner!
Tuna comes in several varieties … no I don’t mean solid packed in water or oil … lol … but the scrumptious Bluefin, Yellowfin, Blackfin, Bigeye or Albacore and are all tasty additions to the dinner table.
Now, BigAl and I have learned how to fish these “bad boys” from trial and error … in fact many errors …. But I think we finally have the secret … Hehehe … at least we have pretty good luck. We start out our fishing trips by locating the birds that are dipping into the water feeding. The birds are eating the bait fish … the same bait fish that tuna’s call “good” eats! When you spot birds there is a very good chance that there are tuna down below ringing the dinner bell. When you get close to the area, look to see if the water is boiling with activity from below. This is what really makes a fisherman’s heart thump with excitement …
OK, the following is what NOT to do …. Troll slowly through the middle of the action sending birds and the fish below scurrying away. If you check out tuna facts, you

will find that they are one of the seas fastest swimming fish. They can easily reach speeds of up to 45 mph so a slow troll simply does not do it for these guys. We like to troll between 10-15 mph and always have good luck. Try trolling just on the outskirts of the school … you will find that they will make a break from the pack to scoop up your tasty morsel and in turn audition for your dinner table! How cool is that?
What about bait, you ask? Well, we have tried all sorts of exotic stuff … from live bait to colorful lures to daisy chains and everything in between. These all may work some time, but one evening we got the real skinny from a local … after numerous Kalik’s, he spilled the beans … and it was very simple … a cedar plug! An unpainted cedar plug is even better … who would have thought? These nondescript looking lures don’t float my boat, but take it from me, they work like a charm!
The last time we hit it big on a tuna run, the action was so hot that we blew one engine … no kidding … well it was just a belt, but we continued to crank up the one remaining engine to hook just a couple of more of these guys. After all, we had plenty of wasabi and our mouths were watering for tuna sashimi … oh my!
So when you plan your Bahamas vacation and you write up your “packing” list, make sure you bring at least a 30 SPF sunscreen, a hat and plenty of Wasabi!

Fun with Sand in Your Shorts – Bahama Vacations!

What does your mind picture when you think about a Bahamas vacation? Do you see crystal clear blue water that goes on forever with sugar sand beaches that are so white that you have to shade your eyes from the blinding glare? How about warm, balmy breezes that are scented with tropical flowers and a touch of salt … oh my ... it almost brings tears to my eyes just to think about it!

The Bahamas offer this and so much more for you, your family and friends. BigAl and I have had our Bimini hideaway for 9 years now. Located on South Bimini Bahamas in the Bimini Sands Marina complex it is a rare gem indeed.

Bimini is the closest Bahamian island to the United States. If you leave from Haulover Beach in Miami with your boat it is about 42 miles voyage across the gulfstream and if you take an airplane it is about 15-20 minutes from the Fort Lauderdale Airport …. Very cool, indeed! I did mention that Bimini is an island so the only way to get there is by air or sea. You will love the privacy.

When you want to enjoy a secluded Bahamas vacation this is exactly what you want. In fact, for me, it is the most fun I can have with sand in my shorts … lol!

For those of you that love the water and all the adventures that it can bring, a vacation in Bimini Bahamas has so much to choose from. Do you like to bobble about in the warm ocean waters soaking up the healing powers that only salt water can give you? How about putting your head under water … you know ... snorkeling or diving? Bimini Bahamas has some of the best underwater views in the world. Just imagine yourself in an underwater aquarium swimming along with brilliantly colored fish and watching them go about their lives on the reef. Maybe you would like to fish Bimini? Ernest Hemingway and many others have caught world championship marlin and other trophy fish in addition to the “just darn good eating” fish!

OK, maybe walking barefoot along the beach is more your cup of tea. The surf brings in so many exotic shells and driftwood to collect or to just enjoy. Lying on a comfy lounger waterside with a beach umbrella shading you is also a wonderful way to relax. Add a cool beverage with a slice of fresh fruit in it and you have an afternoon that memories are made of. That’s what Bahama vacations are all about!

Enjoy your vacation in the Bahamas in our Bimini Sands Condo on South Bimini.

Get Conched on your Bahamas Vacation!

Bahama vacations are the BEST! For a bit of adventure, just cross the “Gulf” stream and cruise over to the Bahamas! Bimini Bahamas, only 42 miles east of Miami, is an easy day trip in your boat and on the way you can “catch” your own supper. Ah … you are all thinking fish, but what I really mean is a delightful conch! I say catch, but conch (pronounced “konk”) don’t move too fast…..in fact, they make watching grass grow a competitive sport!

We had a Bimini Bash not too long ago …. All of us waited with anticipation for the “conch” dude to arrive at the dock of our Bimini Sands condo with his catch. Cruising up to the dock in a 12 foot unpainted flats boat was the "man" dressed in a bright purple wet suit, his boat laden with the delightful Queen Conch. Bargaining begins…how many… do we want him to clean them…of course…would we like to keep the shells for souvenirs…maybe…OK, for a few dollars and a couple of cold Budweiser’s we struck a deal.
Now the fun begins! Before I really get into the prep of this tasty treat I open up an icy cold bottle of Kalik….that’s beer brewed in the Bahamas and excellent with a squeeze of lime……I like mine over ice with a straw, but that’s my own little secret….most people just like the lime. Preparation of cracked conch can be thirsty work! Once the conch is totally cleaned and I have removed all of the orange and black “parts”, I slice it into ¼ inch slices so that I have little fillets. Next I bring out my conch “whacker”…..this device strikes fear into the heart of my husband….I guess because I enjoy this part way too much! Place the fillets on a plastic cutting board and begin to “whack” the heck out of them….I like mine tenderized to the point of being able to read a newspaper through it.
Now dredge it in seasoned flour, dip in beaten egg, then re-dredge and place on a plate…..in the meantime heat some butter in a sauce pan … did you hear your arteries chuckle? The actual cooking is best done outside if at all possible because of the mess it makes, but if there is fire, it will work anywhere. Gently sauté the fillets on both sides until golden brown and place on a paper towel to drain.
OK, now we’re really ready to get down to business. As a fan of wine, the wine food pairing aspect always enters the picture. Just what do we pair with this Bahamian delicacy? One of my favorites is a clean, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc from France to compliment this buttery rich conch treat. This is definitely the choice of the girls in the group … the boys, being boys, stick with the Kalik … lol!
I plate up the conch with fresh sliced lime on the side, my preferred garnish, and in addition I whip up a quick tartar sauce of light miracle whip and sweet pickled relish….hey in the Bahamas you use what you can find! DELICIOUS!
When you decide to finally go on that Bahamas vacation, you will have all sorts of cool adventures like this … this is what the vacationing in the Bahamas is all about ….stepping outside the “box” … doing things that are different and having the time of your life!
Bimini Bahamas isn’t all that far away from the USA, but in terms of lifestyle …. AHHHH!

Have the time of your life on your own Bahamas vacation!

Our Bimini Sands Condo is available for your use.
